Obituary of Lorraine Herman
(Alberta) Lorraine Herman - beloved ‘Greenie’ to her family - passed away in Toronto on October 10, 2025, after confounding palliative care doctors by outliving their predictions for several years. She was 96 fabulous, beautiful years old.
Lorraine was born in Toronto on August 04, 1929, the first child of Vera and Arthur Campbell. From childhood, she demonstrated both passion and talent for drawing and at 8 years old was among a small group of children selected to attend special art classes on Saturdays at the Art Gallery of Ontario.
After graduating from Ontario Ladies College (which failed to quell her not very lady-like boho spirit), Lorraine completed a 3-year post-secondary arts program at Central Technical School. She then sailed off to post-war England to continue her studies at St. Martins School of Art in London. While there, she somehow drifted into the field of ceramics, at first by hand-painting pieces for a small studio owned by her then-boyfriend.
Lorraine eventually returned from England and in 1957 married Jack Herman (d. 2019) after he promised to build her a house without a kitchen (not true!); shortly after, they began their lives as studio potters. Lorraine worked in hand-built ceramics. Her sculpted figures depicted period costumes, as well as more contemporary portraits and whimsical themes. She also collaborated with Jack, decorating his wheel thrown ceramics. Although she earned her living as a potter, Lorraine continued drawing for her own pleasure and filled countless sketchbooks with her work, much of it depicting places and people she encountered while traveling.
No words can encompass how much Lorraine will be missed by her family and friends: her son and her daughter in law, Gregor Herman and Carol Sebert; her daughter Shauna Herman; her younger brother Robert Campbell; her three grandchildren; her three great grandchildren; and the various nieces, nephews, and very dear friends who always kept in touch with her, bringing her much pleasure.
The family is grateful to everyone at Kensington Gardens who cared for Lorraine with respect and affection in her last three years.
