Obituary of Mary Emilia D Souza

Born on January 6, 1937, in India, and called home to the Lord on December 30, 2025, our beloved Mary lived a life defined by courage, faith, and unwavering determination. She was one of ten siblings, raised in humble circumstances that shaped her resilience, sharp intellect, and fiery spirit.

Her life journey spanned India, Kuwait, and Canada, and wherever she lived, she left an indelible mark on the lives around her. She was a fierce and formidable woman—an achiever who never shied away from a challenge. In fact, if someone said something couldn’t be done, that was precisely the reason she would make it happen. Fearless and strong-willed, she faced daunting situations head-on and emerged wiser each time.

For many years, she practiced as a holistic practitioner, deeply believing in the healing power of herbal medicine and natural remedies. Long before it became widely embraced, she trusted the wisdom of nature and devoted herself to helping others heal—physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

Widowed at the age of 55, she learned how to rebuild her life without her husband, demonstrating extraordinary strength, independence, and grace. She became the go-to person for family, friends and community alike—an effective problem solver, a source of sound advice, and the first line of defense for the Mathias family. When challenges arose, she was the one people turned to, confident she would find a way forward.

An ardent believer in Christ, her faith was the foundation of her life. It guided her decisions, grounded her through hardship, and inspired the compassion she showed to everyone she encountered. Though she lacked formal education, she rose far above that limitation, consistently displaying remarkable intelligence, wisdom, and practical brilliance. Her life was proof that education does not define capability—character does.

She was a devoted mother to Lydia and Anita (Tony), a loving grandmother to Linda (David), Tasha (Murtaza), Tracy, and Trevor (Natalia), and a proud great-grandmother to Maya and Noah. Her love for her family was steadfast and unconditional, expressed through her actions, guidance, and unwavering presence.

Deeply rooted in her heritage, she stayed true to her culture throughout her life and cherished Manglorean food until the very end—a simple joy that connected her to her culture, roots and memories.

She will be remembered as a woman of fire and faith, strength and wisdom, compassion and conviction. Her legacy lives on in the generations she nurtured, the lives she healed, and the countless problems she solved with courage and clarity. She leaves behind a family forever shaped by her example and a life that truly made a difference.

The family would also like to extend their deepest gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and healthcare staff at M-Site, Q-Site, and CVH, who cared for her with compassion, dignity, and dedication over the last six and a half months of her life. Your kindness, patience, and tireless efforts brought comfort not only to her, but to our entire family during a difficult time. We will always be thankful for the care and humanity you showed her.
