Obituary of William "Bill" Charles Brereton
BRERETON, William Charles
Passed away peacefully, in the Palliative Care Unit of Northumberland Hills Hospital, on Monday, March 13th, 2017 at the age of 77.
Bill (or “Billy B.”) was the proud father of twins Corrie Brereton (Andrew Hamilton) and the Rev. Daniel Brereton (James Anok), grandfather of Iain Brown and eldest brother of Patty, Marty, Bruce and Gordie Brereton and Mary Ellen Jones. Bill is predeceased by his brothers David John and Dean. He is remembered fondly by his Aunt June and a large extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Bill worked for many years with Matthews Conveyer and coached both youth and adults in hockey – a game he loved to play and watch. Bill also served many years with the Port Hope Volunteer Firefighters and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and in his younger years was a drummer in the Legion Pipe Band. A big supporter of his family’s figure skating, Bill spent many hours building sets for the annual Figure Skating Club carnival, and cooking late dinners for his wife and children after their late night return from the arena.
Sociable but intensely private, Bill liked nothing better than to be home eating dinner with his family (always roast beef on Sundays). Bill was famous for wanting to leave parties ten minutes after getting there but having to wait at least an hour while his very talkative wife Heather said her goodbyes.
After a massive stroke left Heather requiring long-term care in 2013, Bill went every day to have breakfast with his wife. After her death in November 2016, Bill repeatedly said: “I just want to be with Heather again”. After a separation of just four months, they are reunited.
At Bill’s request, there will be no memorial service following a private cremation. Bill and Heather’s ashes will be laid to rest together later this year, on their wedding anniversary. In memory of Bill, donations can be made via mail to St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church, 33 Pine St N, Port Hope, ON L1A 3G5
