Obituary of Peter Matthews Barr
Peter passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on August 1, 2020. He devoted his life to loving, raising and nurturing his family. Beloved husband of Eileen for 60 years who predeceased him in 2018. Loving father to Gordon (Lynne), John, Stephen (Valerie) and predeceased by David. Adoring and caring grandfather to eight grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. His family and friends were his purpose and he loved you all. Peter lived a life filled with love and faith.
Peter was a true servant and positively impacted the lives of all that he crossed paths with. Whether at work, church, volunteering or coaching teams he was always committed to helping those around him and putting their interests and development above his own. He was happiest when helping others.
Together, Peter and Eileen were incredibly devoted to their children and their families. Nothing brought Peter more joy than spending time with his grandchildren. Peter would travel any distance to attend one of their many recitals, school pageants or graduations. He logged countless miles to watch their soccer, baseball or hockey games, whether it be Ontario or all the way to Colorado. Peter loved them dearly and they could do no wrong in his eyes. Peter was also a great son and brother, and loved his many nieces and nephews.
Peter grew up and spent most of his 85 years in the Beach neighbourhood in Toronto. He loved sports and played competitive football, hockey and baseball making many lifelong friends at Malvern Collegiate, the Balmy Beach Club and Ted Reeve. He enjoyed walking along the boardwalk or Queen St where he was sure to bump into friends or family.
Peter was a faithful Christian and long time member of Forward Baptist Church on Gerrard St in Toronto. His faith guided him and was the foundation for how he lived his life. He made many great friends at Forward and long cherished the many fond memories of time spent together. A celebration of life will be scheduled for a future date when friends and family will be free to attend without risk. He will be laid to rest privately at St. John's Norway Cemetery (256 Kingston Road at Woodbine, Toronto).
