Sam was my boss when I worked in RIDC. I am very sorry to hear of his passing. I kind of thought he’d live forever.
I was thinking of him today because I am jumping in to try ChatGPT.. I remember Sam’s passion and curiosity about AI way back in 1986. He was such a visionary.
All the best to Sam’s family.

I am deeply saddened to learn of Sam's passing away، and his struggles with Alzheimer's۔ it is difficult to imagine such an incisive mind losing its powers to the dreadful disease۔ I had the good fortune to work with Sam in U of T School of Continuing Studies۔ May his family and friends find the strength to face this loss of a great human being۔

Samih (Sam), my dear brother, was lucky inheriting the best from our Dad, his intelligence, and our Mom, her generosity. I was lucky too - but with smaller doses.
We had a great childhood full of adventure and rivalry growing up with a large contingent of cousins, and friends. One of our older cousins, the late Dr. Wadid Boghdady, lived with us for 3 years (1956-1959) while attending the Faculty of Dentistry, Cairo University. He was a fun loving cousin, and mentor. Sam loved all his cousins. But one who was very close to his heart is our beloved the late Maged Daoud. It started when they once shared spending a few weeks together at our Aunt’s place in Alexandria during the summer school holidays. They formed a lifelong bond - a bond that lasted until the passing away of our dear Maged in 2017.
Sam was a ray of sunshine to whoever was lucky to cross his path. He had the natural gift of corralling support for worthy endeavours, whether work or fun related. He is known for offering good advice in any muddy situation affecting a family member or a friend. From my experience – he was seldom wrong.
Illustrating Sam’s communication skills came from one of Sam’s dear colleagues, Chris Stoute, who wrote me an email dated December 26, 2020 - upon learning of Sam’s passing away. Chris stated in part: “Yes, he was the most well-known person within the Ryerson Faculty who introduced so many of us to others. The Engineering Dept. was isolationists and shy as most engineers are. Sam broke, not shattered, that mold for our benefits”.
Sam made lifelong friends not only from school and university, but also from Heliopolis Sporting Club, and the Boy Scouts. Two of those lifelong friends are Magid Dimyan, and Pierre Gharghouri (Petro) – they met in 1958, their frosh year at the Faculty of Engineering, Cairo University.
Christiane (Tina) and Soheir Daoud (Soha), our dear cousin, were very close childhood friends. Sam and Tina started dating when Sam was still in high school and their preferred meeting place was the Heliopolis Sporting Club. That is also where Soha caught Petro’s eye whenever she was with Tina socializing in a mixed group. The four, Sam/Tina and Petro/Soha, started double dating for many years and ended with Sam and Tina, his first love, tying the knot in 1963 and Petro and Soha tying theirs in 1964.
Upon his arrival to Canada early winter, 1965 with his wife Tina, and a few months old Carole, Sam had an immense responsibility of settling down, and finding a job. To boot, Tina and Sam also managed to accommodate me and our parents that same year, 1965. They took the brunt of helping me out along with my loving parents for 3 years and were close to Myra, myself and our two lovely daughters –Nicole and Cheryl. Sam and Tina celebrated their accomplishments as they were growing up, gifting them generously at their birthdays and at the family Christmas gatherings. More importantly also giving them advice and moral support whenever the parents were inflexible!!
Throughout the years, Sam and I remained very close and he will always be close to my heart. Operas and movies were favourite outings. Sam had a gift for storytelling, and knew how to captivate his audience making him an excellent professor. His lectures were always interesting and dynamic, constantly adding relevant references from various disciplines. I attended one of his weekly lectures specifically so I could enjoy his company on the ride home. I also have fond memories of our coffees with our cousins Maged & Petro when we retired.
He was my brother, my mentor, and my keeper. It is a major loss for me, and my dear wife Myra. He will be greatly missed by our two daughters, Nicole (Husband Dan & Children: Lucas; and Zachary) and Cheryl (Husband Marko & Twins: Cedric; and Theodore).

It is impossible to translate our emotions in words for the departure of dear Samih. He was our Dean in Canada, first in our close family to arrive in this land and such a welcoming personality. Samih and Tina were my first hosts when I arrived in Toronto in July 1970. The advice and encouragement I received in the first few days were fundamental to where I am today. His rewards for what he did to me and certainly many others are being redeemed now that he reached his ultimate resting place. We just missed the opportunity to express our gratitude in person to Samih in the last few months.
May the Lord rest Samih's soul in peace. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, especially the six guardian angels that accompanied Samih through his last moments, so the Lord may give you peace and trust in eternal reunion.

Sam:
He always was an inspiring person I learned to love.
Dr Sam Mikhail – is for all the work, planning and successful projects where you mentored and teached. Your great numbers of students made you acknowledge people better, and your better human quality was always to try to teach and also to learn. Always spending time to learn more and innovative issues.
Sam - is the colleague, the kind man who knew how to spend good lifetime, having great mood almost all the time, witty, who knew a number of places in the world, loved travelling, , appreciated good restaurants, music, films and arts
Sammy - is at home intimacy, the warm father and grand father we learned to admire.I had the luck to be present at his birthday sometimes and saw how you were loved by all your friends and family.
Your name, Samih , we will never forget. I am Lucky to have known such an intelligent and wise man, who became my friend. You had the generosity to welcome me in your house with Marsha a number of times, and there I appreciated your warmth and sensitivity .
Since 2018 when I received your last message , I was always wanting news but got no answers. Asked a friend in Montreal to try to reach you and Marsha, but seems he only got answering machines.
Finally this week sent Marsha a message when she told me the bad news. Unfortunately we will never see Sam again, but his image is carved in my mind and he will never be forgotten. With much emotion, I´m praying God to receive him lovingly in the best place.

My deepest condolences to the immediate family of Samih and the Mikhail family for the loss of a wonderful friend. I met Samih through my friends Nabih and Myra and immediately formed a deep bond with him. I also had the pleasure of meeting Marsha. Samih had a very warm personality and his reputation as a leading educator, innovator and a force of nature in the higher education field in Ryerson University, and University of Toronto preceded him through many of his colleagues that were common friends.
I was saddened to hear of his health struggles recently, and can only find comfort that he is now relieved of his earthly pains.

I LOVED SEEING HIM WITH HIS GRAND DAUGHTERS, AND LOVED HOW HIS EYES WOULD LIGHT UP WHEN HE SAW MARSHA. HIS LAST YEARS WERE FULL OF TOO MANY HEALTH ISSUES , UNFAIR AS THEY ALL ARE, MY HEART GOES OUT TO ALL WHO LOVE HIM. XO
