George Yonemura

Obituary of George Yonemura

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of George Mamoru Yonemura on July 28, 2022.

George was born on May 6, 1945 in Tamana, Kumamoto, Japan.  He was the eldest of three children, and was always incredibly responsible looking after his younger siblings Ruth and Henry.    Growing up in Japan, George was active in sports, very strong academically and thrived as the lead roles in theatre plays.

George and family moved to Canada in 1959, at the age of 14.  It was a difficult transition for anyone going through such a bold change, but George and family remarkably persevered by learning a new language and culture.  While in high school, a friend told George about the part-time job he had, and helped George to get a job there too.  That was the beginning of his life-long career at the A&P Food Store.  After high school, he started working full-time there and worked at different locations of A&P across the Greater Toronto Area .  He truly loved his work and always put in his best efforts and achieved many awards from the A&P Company for his dedication to his work.  He retired from A&P (now known as Metro) after a wonderful 47 year career.

George met his wife Yoko at a local Japanese bowling event in 1975.  They married in 1976, settled in Mississauga, Ontario and had two children, Michelle and Brian.  He dedicated his life to providing for his family and committed to always making them feel safe and loved.  He spent numerous hours chauffeuring his kids anywhere they wanted to go in the city regardless of time or traffic conditions, without complaint.  George was also a cherished Grandpa to Daniel and Austin.  He loved playing with the kids and they always looked forward to helping water his plants.

George was an avid sports fan and enjoyed spending his free time playing sports, watching sports, or listening to sports talk radio.  In particular he was a huge baseball and golf fan.  He has a large display of trophies that range from softball, billiards, bowling and golf.  His passion for golf is so strong that after retirement, he volunteered at Streetsville Glen Golf Club as a Golf Marshal.  Aside from sports, George was an avid gardener (much like his own father) and loved spending time in his garden, planting and harvesting many varieties of fruits and vegetables.

George will be remembered for his outgoing jovial personality, his dedication to his family and work and his love for sports.

The family would like to thank the medical staff at Trillium Health Partners - Mississauga Hospital, especially Dr. M.J Kirigin for the great care that George received in his final days.

The family will be having a private service for George.  In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in George’s honour with the Heart and Stroke Foundation by using the Donations Tab on his home page.

We invite you to share memories, photos and to make donations here at his memorial web page.
