I attended Doreen Hayes School of Dance in the 60's and was taught tap and jazz by Doreen. I attended these lessons for a few years and remember many recitals as well. The costumes were colorful and very elaborate made of sequins and silky material. I believe the lessons taught me rhythym and the love of dance as well. Doreen had a lot of rules back then but the one that sticks out the most was that we were not allowed pop before the class as she didn't want anyone burping or having an upset stomach during class. The coke machine in the waiting room always looked enticing to us kids and one night I couldn't resist and bugged my mom to buy me one before class and I drank it fast....well....sure enough I had stomach issues and Doreen knew exactly what had transpired so I was in a little bit of trouble with her but my mom got the brunt of the lecture that night. Every time I see tap dancing on TV it does take me back to those years and I did get my 15 mins of fame back then as I was lucky to be on Tiny Talent Time twice.
My thanks to Doreen for teaching me so much through dance. I only wish I had told her this years ago.

I spent many hours at the studio many years ago and always enjoyed seeing Doreen. She was quite the woman and I was very sad to hear the news of her passing. I have so many wonderful memories of the dancing, the recitals, the friends I met there and of Doreen's unforgettable voice and laugh. I am grateful that she was a part of my life and taught me to be fearless and fabulous.

I remember that I was 7 years old when I started at the dance studio that was in 1957 in the tap class there were 3 of us and in baton there were 2 of us. On one occasion we went to a competition and Miss Hayes said let's put my signature on your face so they will know where you came from. I was thinking what was she going to do with my face....then came the beauty mark. I still smile today thinking about that! I remember how she took me into her arms as I was crying because the next day I was moving to California and she wouldn't come with me. I will always remember Miss Hayes.

The world has lost a truly classic legend in the passing of Doreen. She was a one of a kind Lady, with a big smile, but bigger heart. I met Doreen about 35 years ago while playing bingo at the International Center, and we became good friends. Over the years I attended many of her year end dance recitals, and loved going to the race track with her to see her horses run. Sometimes they even won. I also enjoyed watching her Nightclub acts, singing and dancing in many of the best hotels that use to be on the airport strip. Her life was all about dancing, doing it and teaching it to thousands of children across the city in that basement studio at Jane and Bloor. May you rest in peace Beautiful Lady! Condolences also to her two daughters and family.

Doreen Hayes was certainly one of the most amazing women we have ever had the pleasure of meeting. As a former dancer and dance mom of her studio we both can honestly reflect back on those years with great pleasure. We extend to her family our deepest condolences. We are both so grateful we had the chance to know her.

Indeed, my first dance teacher when I walked into her studio in 1978 to take a tap class! I taught for her for 10 or so years and yes, so many good times...Doreen was hilarious and those years at her studio and the parties were some of the best! She would always say, 'If those walls could talk!' She was my mentor, a huge influence on my life and good friend. She touched thousands... young and old. I'm still dancing to this day! I will miss her dearly... Sincere condolences to Doreen's family, Larry and her closest friends. She's dancing in heaven!

It was with great sadness that we learn of Miss Hayes passing. She was a determined, feisty lady who was larger than life. She was an inspiration and an icon for many young dancers with stars in their eyes and futures. She showed them determination, perfection and the will to never give up because she never gave up. She was a very large part of my daughter, Veronica's life, and she was one of the reasons for Veronica's decision to pursue dance. She believed in her, and as a result, contributed in helping Veronica believe in herself.
From our family we extend our deepest condolences for your loss. She will be sorely missed by many, but she leaves behind many great moments and memories that will leave a smile on your face and uplift your heart. RIP Doreen Hayes❤️

Miss Hayes was one-of-a-kind and her larger-than-life personality made it seem like she would live forever. Her passing is a sad event, but the memories live on. As one of her dance students since 1962, I knew her for most of my life -- the longest of anyone outside of my own family. I feel privileged to have known her, to have learned from her, and to have talked and laughed with her for so long. My sincere sympathy and condolences to Miss Hayes' family and friends. May your thoughts and memories of her all be happy ones.
