I got to know Paulette working with her on shows at Odyssey Theatre. Paulette was one of those rare actors that has immense versatility and keeps making exciting discoveries during rehearsals and performances. She played a voluptuous and cunning hustler, a hard-nosed cop, a soulful Queen, a penniless matchmaker, and a member of a comic trio of outcasts, all of which were a joy to watch.
Paulette's nature was to find joy in the present moment. She always found the magic in creating open-air theatre, a magic she shared with company members and with me, buoying us all up through the challenging working conditions.
Over the years Paulette and I became dear friends. I feel so grateful that we were part of each other's lives. As a friend she is fiercely loyal, generous, tactfully honest, and spiritual. I could be myself with her and trust that I would be accepted. I knew that if I was ever in trouble, she is someone I could turn to. Paulette raised the bar of what friendship means.
I loved and learned from watching Paulette grow in her life and career. She's a multi-talented artist who shifted from visual artist to theatre actor to film actor to film editor and maker, extraordinary leaps that took talent, courage, good sense and commitment. All these things let her accomplish so much. One of her secrets was that she sought to live meaningful project by meaningful project. In much the same way, with much thought and planning, I watched as she, Alex and D'Arcy, took big steps, and met with life's challenges, as they built their lives together. And amid a busy career, and deeply caring for the two people she treasured most in life, Paulette had the expansiveness of spirit to embrace many friends and much volunteer work. She sets the bar high not just as a friend but as a person and I am still learning many of the lessons she taught me.
