Patti Sakamoto

Obituary of Patti Sakamoto

Today we remember and celebrate the life of Patricia Sakamoto, a beloved mother, sister, cousin, and friend. Patricia passed away suddenly but peacefully on Wednesday, September 18, 2024.  Daughter of Jane and Tom, she was a vibrant, mischievous presence to all who knew her.

Patti was the loving mother to Hannah and Griffin Leigh-Bell. She raised them with warmth, knowledge, creativity, and unconditional love. These outstanding qualities could be seen integrated throughout her work in early childhood education. The special traits, which made her the amazing mother she was, would find their way into all her interactions with children and families at the YMCA, and other institutions that were lucky enough to experience her.

In the last several years of her time with us, Patti had begun rediscovering academia, and was an avid student of ECE programming as well as psychology.  Not only was she a talented and extremely driven student, but was also an exceptionally gifted writer.  Her legacy and the intricacies of her worldview will live on through her poetry and other writings.

She was particularly skilled at crafting warm, inviting, comforting living spaces - perhaps a trait inherited from her mother, Jane. Our homes together were always welcoming, radiating with warmth and felt very, very safe. The fridge was routinely filled with the perfect snack or leftovers to raid, and her deep appreciation of the natural world meant that her living spaces were always full of greenery, beautifully worn wooden surfaces, and other expressions of life and natural vibrancy that expressed her personality wonderfully.

Patti loved all animals and all livings things, but her true love was horses. She was a horse lover her whole life, owning a thoroughbred named Viarctic for many years as well as working in several stables in the Tri-City area. Her love of the equine was reflected in so many spheres - her book collections, her photographs, her friendships, her online presence, everything was tinted with her passion for horses and the accompanying culture.

Patrica Sakamoto was an amazing human being, and even more than that, an amazing soul.  As we continue to navigate through this messy but beautiful thing we call life, accumulating more stories to tell and more bumps and bruises, we can be sure that she’s watching over all of us, just as she always loved to do.
