The jazz world remembers Stacie McGregor, an extraordinary Canadian pianist, composer, and mentor, who passed away on October 30, 2024. Known for her remarkable talent and dedication, Stacie’s career was marked by artistry, a commitment to sharing music, and a legacy that continues to inspire across generations.
Born in Montreal on December 26, 1961, Stacie was the third child of Robert and Joanne McGregor. Her family later moved to Winnipeg, where her passion for music and creativity first flourished. Beginning piano at the age of six, her early years were also marked by a love for sports. She excelled in speed swimming and basketball, earning a place on the provincial all-star basketball team while attending Westwood Collegiate. By twelve, her musical talent had already gained national attention when she placed third in the Yamaha Songwriting Competition.
Encouraged by her mentor, Winnipeg jazz legend Ron Paley, Stacie moved to Toronto to study at Humber College’s jazz program. After graduating, she quickly became a key figure in Toronto’s vibrant music scene, performing across genres and collaborating with prominent artists. Her versatility led her to a Juno Award in 1999 as part of Madagascar Slim’s band, marking her as one of Canada’s brightest musical talents.
