We feel incredibly honoured to have known Sallie. We both practiced yoga with her for several years. Her patient, nurturing, guidance brought so much peace and joy to our lives. Etienne remembers fondly the summer of 2016 when he stayed at Sallie and Jay's home. Sharing meals and conversations were fulfilling and enriching. Sallie always had a laugh. Thank you Sallie for being a beautiful light in our lives and so many others. We love you. Sending love, warmth, and sincere condolences to Sallie's family.

Jay, Nate, and Darwin,
I send condolences on the passing of Sallie. I knew her first when we were mums of young children — I respected her so much as a mother — she was creative, kind, and utterly dedicated. Since then I’ve come to learn of the huge impact Sallie had in the theatre and dance communities. Her passing is such a shock, and I am so sorry.

We knew Sallie as neighbours on Manning in the 1990s, We often met in the schoolyard, Sallie, an accomplished runner, in full flight, and me earthbound with two small dogs in tow. My son Nick babysat Nate and Darwin and remembers them as so much fun.
Sallie was special. She stood out in a crowd--willowy and graceful with a creative personal style and always interesting jewelry. Her quiet charm always made it a treat to chat with her on the street or at a social event. She will be missed by so many.
Our sympathies to her family at this sad time.

Dear Jay,
Please accept my condolences upon hearing of the passing of Sally. We worked together many years ago and I recall her as a committed disciplined, sensitive and intelligent collaborator. Subsequently I would run into her on my walks to work or see her at the theatre.
She will be missed by the Toronto Arts community. She made an invaluable contribution to this community.

An image I'll always remember is Sallie last fall sitting on her lovely deck at the cottage high up among the hemlocks looking down on the lake with a chickadee feeding out of her hand while with the other hand she tapped the railing to direct a chipmunk she'd trained to keep its assigned feeding place on the ground. Sallie serene and at one with nature but also managing to keep a little order in the universe.

Sallie & I were comrades and friends in our studies of Authentic Movement. I see her long limbs and lithe body in movement and stillness, her twinkling eyes, hearty laugh, infectious smile, her tears, a determined perseverance and fierce resolve, her passionate pursuit at life's wellsprings, and her spirit.
We shared a love of earrings and scarves to the priority of family, including our mothers' elder care, to searchings of soul. Although I didn't know Sallie well, we were linked over many years by our bond.
I light a candle in remembrance and send heart-felt condolences to Sallie's friends and family.

The most meaningful piece of advice Sallie ever gave me when I was a student was that I needed to stop trying to please other people so much. As a 19 year old at the time - it was hard to grasp. But it stuck with me, and as time's gone on, I've realized how much of a gift that wisdom's been. OM Shanti, Shanti, Shanti, dear teacher. <3

Sallie was my instructor at U of T in 2014/2015. I always found her class to be interesting, challenging, and entertaining. She was a tough broad - she cared a great deal about what she taught, and expected the same of her students. She was never blasé, and that was so refreshing in an academic environment.
I will fondly remember her knowing, mischievous grin, and the twinkle in her eyes.
My deepest condolences to her family.

Sallie was a nurturing teacher during my time as a student at the UC Drama Program, and a welcoming colleague when I was a course instructor there, several years later. Treating a former student as a colleague and equal takes a real generosity of spirit, and Sallie did it like it was the most natural thing in the world.
Over the past few years, I spoke with Sallie more rarely, but would often see her biking down Harbord. You could always spot Sallie blocks away. Most cyclists on Harbord are hunched over, speeding down the lane. Sallie was always unhurried, moving steadily and sitting perfectly upright, in an easy vertical alignment. While others were rushing through the world, Sallie was traveling in the world, aware of space, open to experience, and creating space for joy in the simplest tasks.

I know you all from so mmany years ago at Huron Community Play School. Nate you were there with my younger son Jules and some times you would play afterwards together at our houses. I kept bumping into Sally over the years..sometimes at Loop Art Gallery openings, sometimes on the street. We overlapped as yoga teachers. and most recently with Old Women dancing.
I always found her remarkable.
She was easy to engage with and she was always interested . I loved her seriousness, her grace and care. I did not know she was ill. I am sorry there is no longer that possibility to have that spontaneous conversation. much love to all of you ,Jane

My deepest condolences. I had the privilege of dancing with Sallie during the 80s, and being with her was always a joy. She and I shared another activity -- we both worked at Fanasty Farms, helping couple marry. Sometimes there'd be 6 wedding scheduled on a weekend, and it was a study in human behaviour watching all the wedding parties.
May I hope that in time, her memory will bring a smile to your lips before a tear to your eye. Her life was about love. What a gift she left.

I am deeply saddened by receiving the news of Sallie’s death. I extend my deepest condolences to her loved ones during this time. I met Sallie when she was my Movement Instructor at The University of Toronto when I was 17 in 2014. I was sort of a bit of an emotional mess during that year when she was teaching me about the art of performance and she went above and beyond as my professor by constantly challenging me and offering clarity to the work. She challenged me to and allowed me to be vulnerable in our work and therefore in all areas of my life. She brought so much awareness and the gift of presence into my eyes as a student. Sallie was always graceful, strong, passionate and powerful in her work and in herself. She was an inspiration and a good hearted person. As I am both a mother and wife now, her words of wisdom and encouragement in my first year of university had such an impact on my spiritual journey and success today. I am so thankful to have worked with her.

Even though it has been almost 20 years since she was last my teacher in a school setting, I continued to seek her advice, wisdom and techniques all up until the start of the pandemic last winter. When I could no longer visit her in her studio, we were relegated to emails and fb messages. My heart aches at the loss of this woman whose profound awareness and deep empathy for others was a gift to the world. Many people live a surface existence, scared of what lies beneath themselves and others; They go about their day to days, continuing with a surface dwelling existence. My teacher Sallie Lyons was not one of these people. When others went superficial she steered the course to go deeper, beyond the image to what lies beneath. Moreover, she could identify other's emotions that were toxic for them and help clear them free of it. A few years ago I sent her a montage video about Dame Gillian Lynne as a gift, to tell her that she embodied for me, this same story. She responded with, "Oh Tyler... you're the Best!" I will forever miss her knowledge, intuition, warm soul and ability to just snap you into a new stratosphere like a good, quick, swift, big kick in the butt! Love you always and forever my lovely friend Sal. Sending warm and light energy to her family and loved ones!

To Jay, Nate, Darwin and Hallie - What love and kindness you gave your mother during her illness and especially during her last days, so she could be at home as she wanted. And what a beautiful tribute to Sallie in this website. Sallie loved all of you with all of her heart and it is precious to see that love given back to her.
I met Sallie in the early 70's at York when we were both in the dance program. In the mid 70's we were part of a small experimental dance company, Rinmon, where Sallie was not only a dancer and choreographer but also kept the business aspects of the company in line. You can imagine how good she was at that although I am not sure it was her favourite thing to do. We continued our friendship over the years when we both had families even though we did not live in the same city.
Sallie loved dancing, choreographing, teaching movement and then yoga and above all Sallie loved her family.
Since her first diagnosis she and I had many great phone visits where we talked about cancer and treatments and more recently about death and dying. Sallie was very conscious, awake and aware at this very special time in her life and so was able to make clear to her loved ones how she wanted this to go. And you dear family gave her the greatest gift of love during this precious time. My heart goes out to you.

Sallie was my lifelong friend from the time we were apartment mates while attending the York U dance programme. We had both previously attended programmes so were entering the York degree later than most of the students. She had attended what later became the Ryerson dance programme while it was in Montreal and I attended Queen's U for a BA in Drama & English. We, along with five others (2 dancers, 2 musicians and a videographer) created Vortex for our interdisciplinary explorations and performances. Our work in this group plus many discussions we had about teaching, creating and living as an artist informed the entire career I was to follow in the arts. After our two years at York ended, we met in Saskatoon and travelled by car via Calgary and Banff to the west coast and I had my first encounter with Vancouver (which I truly loathed!!!) We then drove onto Vancouver Island, she to visit her beloved grandmother in Courtenay, I to visit my brother and sister in law in Comox. We both ended up teaching movement for actors for most of our teaching lives. After I moved to the west coast we only saw one another through short visits to one another's homes, but we had a strong friendship nevertheless. Each of us also worked with Judy Jarvis at different times of Judy's creative work. It was Sallie who thoughtfully called me to let me know of Judy's death after a fire in her apartment. Sallie asked me to participate in a "Happening" at the Dance in Canada conference in Halifax, which was a happy event, with camping on either side of the conference as we drove from Ontario to Nova Scotia with my mother! In 2018 while I was visiting Toronto, our mutual friend Rhonda Ryman invited a number of people who I had known from York to an afternoon "tea" at her home. Among these was of course Sallie. Sallie called Rhonda in advance to ask her to forewarn me that she would be bald because of her treatments. This was so typically thoughtful of her as I'm a little high strung with such situations and she knew me well enough to think of this in advance. She had done something similar for me when we passed through Banff and I was profoundly moved by the indigenous artifacts. She went ahead of me and came back to warn me to not go into one of the rooms where she felt I'd be too upset by the images of the Sundancers. I took her word for it.
Somehow the fact that she died on Family Day is exactly perfect, though I had thought we'd have her for at least till the summer. She loved her family profoundly and was so proud of her children and of Jay. All her choices were centred around them. I had the great pleasure of hosting Devon for the period while she worked on a project here in Vancouver. I'm sorry that I have not gotten to know Nate so well as Devon. My heart is with all three of you in this sad time. love and long hugs CLee

I was Sallie's yoga student for many years, and for a brief spell after that, her friend. I feel extremely fortunate that i got to know her a bit personally--we went to several dance concerts together.
I had a lot of respect and admiration for Sal, and i feel that way about very very few people. She had such integrity, and honesty, and passion, and goodness in her. She was funny, and fantastically alive, and endlessly curious, and supremely devoted to art and the good things in life, and able to maintain a positive outlook in the face of adversity and a world gone to shit (my words, but I think she saw this too).
From what I saw of her during her cancer battle, she fought like no-one I had ever seen fight, and never seemed to feel sorry for herself, and seemed determine to squeeze every last drop out of life. HOnestly, she blew my mind in this regard.
As a yoga student, I got so much out of her classes--particularly on breathing and the management of stress. This came to help me enormously long after I stopped taking yoga classes. Sallie's voice in that class was the very sound of solace, and calm, and comfort. This was no small thing to give to people.
Sallie was a truly remarkable woman. They say that of many in obits, but don't believe everything you hear. Sallie was something else, and she'll remain, in my memory, for a long long time with the fondest recall.
My deepest condolences to all who loved her.
