Dear Janette, Gordon, Jean/Johan & Gail,
We are extremely saddened by the sudden passing away of dear Gilbert. For the short time we knew him here in Canada, he was a gem of a person, a true gentleman, highly approachable, humble and ready to help anyone in need. We considered him to be one of our closest friends and an excellent mentor to us. We will forever cherish the fond memories/fun that we had from his Konkani singing/Karaoke during the get-togethers/BBQ's at your place.
While bidding Adios to our dear friend Gilbert, we pray that his soul may rest in eternal peace and God give you all the strength and courage to bear this great loss

Gilbert, my brother by law and I had an unconventional relationship. I was his favorite sister by law. He didn't have a choice as I am the only sister Jan has and, as I am often reminded, I gave the final stamp of approval for him to be selected as the groom for my sister, which certainly endeared me to him. This subsequently culminated in a long union of 42 years of marriage and bore 3 beautiful children; Gordon, Jean and Gail
Gilbert and I argued and bantered like siblings all the time. He would love to rile me and I would retaliate, which probably raised a few eyebrows but it was all in jest and we enjoyed every moment. He was a social person who loved to connect with people, make friends, network and keep in touch. He once showed me his directory of names, it wasthick. He said, "I have a 1000 names in here" to which I replied have you seen Gordon's fb account?
I learnt all my konkani songs from him. He was the life of the party and would love to strum the guitar and belt out a medley of konkani songs, and, at many an event which we attended together, he would call out to me to sing along with him and we sang together. His favorite hindi song, which he often liked to sing, was Chalte Chalte, the title song of an indian movie. He only knew the 2 lines of the chorus well and ad libbed the rest. I quote this song, as being apt, as we lay Gilbert to rest. Chalte Chalte mere yeh geet yaad rakhna kabhi alveda na kehna, kabhi alveda na kehna. To those who don't speak the language it simple says as I go along my way, remember my song, never say goodbye, never say goodbye and on this note I conclude by saying, "Gilbert, my brother, rest in peace, it is not goodbye but farewell until we meet again". I love you.

It is indeed very sad and difficult time for Gilbert's family to pass thru. My wife & I pray for his eternal peace. May God extend enough courage to the family to overcome their grief. As my daughter Kavita shared her memory, we were neighbours in the same building in Abu Dhabi. Gilbert was a very adorable & loving person and always had time to chit chat while we both were waiting for the elevator.... He always used to be in a hurry and I used to cool him down...
Once again our prayers for his soul to rest in peace. KUMARS, Bangalore.

I know Gilbert uncle from being his neighbor in flat 707 in Modern Bakery bldg in Abu Dhabi. His family was close to mine and my brother, Girish, and I grew up with Gordon and Jean. Gilbert uncle was easy going and always sparked little conversations in the elevator or when waiting for the elevator that always took forever to arrive on our floor. I hold fond memories of the D'Souza family from my childhood and I pray that uncle is in a better place, pain-free and blessing us from above.
